Sophie Lavoie est violoneuse, pianiste, chanteuse, compositrice et ethnomusicologue. Native du Lac-St-Jean, au Québec, elle est introduite dès son jeune âge à la musique classique par l’étude du piano, ainsi qu’à la musique et à la chanson traditionnelles au sein de sa famille. Elle obtient un baccalauréat en piano classique à l’Université de Montréal en 2004. Dans les mêmes années, elle forme le groupe de musique traditionnelle L’attisée, qui obtient une nomination à l’ADISQ en 2011.
En 2009, Sophie forme le duo Sophie & Fiachra avec le musicien Irlandais de renom Fiachra O’Regan. Le duo se produit aux quatre coins de la terre et enregistre plusieurs albums de cette « musique qui vient du cœur » (Songlines Magazine). À partir de 2016, le duo collabore régulièrement avec le guitariste Québécois André Marchand : « la combinaison avec Sophie & Fiachra est absolument magique » (The Irish Music Magazine). Le trio Sophie & Fiachra + André Marchand enregistre Un Canadien errant en 2016, « une expérience musicale saisissante » (Le Devoir) qui obtient trois nominations au Canada (ADISQ et Canadian Folk Music Award).
En 2017, Sophie devient récipiendaire d’une bourse de maîtrise du Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQSC). En 2019, elle dépose son mémoire en ethnomusicologie à l’Université de Montréal, qui s’intitule : « Les violoneux du Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean : style et répertoire des derniers de leur lignée » (télécharger ici). La même année, Sophie enregistre avec Fiachra et André l’album Portraits, qui obtient deux nominations (ADISQ et CFMA). L’album est unanimement acclamé par les critiques tant en Europe qu’en Amérique : « It is a work of art in itself » (Roots Music Canada); « It is hard not to tap your foot to the music on the disc – an enjoyable listen ! » (The Fiddler Magazine). En 2021, son trio Grosse Isle (avec Fiachra et André) sort l’album Le bonhomme sept heures/The bonesetter, qui est deux fois en nomination aux CFMA 2022 et en nomination aux Prix GAMIQ 2021, un album qui est « another delightful album from the Quebec trio » (The living tradition).
Sophie Lavoie a donné des concerts et des ateliers de musique et de chanson traditionnelle à travers le monde – au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe, et en Océanie. Notamment, elle a été chargée de cours à l’Université de Limerick en Irlande, à la fameuse Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. Elle fut trois fois nommée dans la catégorie « traditional singer of the year » au Canadian Folk Music Awards (2017, 2020, 2022), elle « est une compositrice sublime » (FolkWorld), une « violoneuse experte » (Songlines magazine), et « l’une des étoiles montantes de la musique Québecoise (fRoots Magazine).
